Summary
Nadine Gordimer's short story, once upon a time is about the dangers of over reacting. After a scare in her home a reluctant narrator tells herself a bed time story. There is a mother, father, and young son. First the daily insures their home, put Kuo a trespassers warning sign, and puts a fence around the pool to keep their son safe. Next riots begin to take place in the neighborhood and so the family installs and electronically controlled gate. Then burglaries begin to take place because people are starving. There for the family puts bars over their windows and installs an alarm system. Mean while people from outside of the suburb begin to stay on the streets of the suburb. Later the family begins to look at additional security for their fenced yard. The family installs razor wire on top of their fence. One day their young son is pretending to be a prince crawling through a thicket of thorns. Sebsequently he crawls into the razor wire and is killed.
